Managing your computing account

Computing account

Each user has a single account that can be associated with one or more scientific projects, and therefore with one or more hour allocations.

info

If your account is linked to multiple allocations, you can consult our web page concerning the management of multi-project accounts.

Vocabulary

On Jean Zay, a project = an allocation (CPU and/or GPU hours).

An account has two possible states:

  • open; in this case you can:

    • log in to Jean Zay and manage your data;
    • submit jobs to the computing machine (if the project's allocation is not exhausted);
    • submit pre/post-processing jobs.
  • closed; in this case you can no longer log in to the machine.

To be able to consume computing hours, an account must be attached to an hour allocation (or project).

An account can evolve and be modified at any time (attachment to a new project, change of employer, change of connection IP address, etc.).

Opening a computing account

The opening of an account is never automatic or implicit. Each user must follow the account opening procedure in parallel with the hour request procedures.

Before opening a computing account, we invite you to consult the CNRS IT Charter to learn about the best practice rules to follow on IDRIS machines regarding the data security policy.

info

You will find an explanatory video concerning hour requests and opening a computing account on our YouTube channel "Un Ε“il sur l'IDRIS":

The procedure for opening a computing account is detailed πŸ‘‰Β here. It is done via the eDARI portal and the access terms are presented in the GENCI documentation.

The opening of a new account on the machine is effective when the access request is validated (ministerial authorisation, see box below) and the corresponding project has obtained its hour allocation.

warning

At the decision of the IDRIS management or the CNRS Defence Security Officer (FSD), the creation of a new account may be subject to ministerial authorisation, within the framework of the application of the regulation on the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential of the nation (PPST). In such a case, a personal communication will be sent to initiate the required procedure, knowing that the processing of the file may take up to two months.

To anticipate this, you can send an email directly to the centre concerned (see the contacts on the eDARI portal) to initiate the procedure in advance (for yourself or for someone you wish to integrate into your group soon) even before the account opening request is sent for validation to the research structure manager and the research structure security correspondent.

note

In the case of regular access projects, opened from 1 May or 1 November, you will only be able to compute from these dates (unless you have made a request for Transitional Dynamic Access). But do not hesitate to initiate the account opening request in advance to resolve IP address or connection problems in advance and to anticipate the duration of obtaining ministerial authorisation (up to two months).

Attaching an account to an hour allocation

Case of a new allocation

In the case where you wish to consume the hours of a new allocation:

  • if you do not yet have an account at IDRIS, you must open one and indicate the number of the allocation to which the account should be attached during the procedure;
  • if you already have an account open at IDRIS, you must request the attachment of your account to the allocation via the eDARI portal (see our documentation on this subject).

Case of an allocation renewal

Accounts attached to an initial project are automatically carried over to the renewed project if the eligibility conditions of the project members have not changed in the meantime.

So if your account is open and already associated with a project, no action is required on your part when it is renewed.

Modifying an existing account

The Account Management Form allows you to make modifications to an existing account:

  • Detachment from a project;
  • Addition or removal of connection IP addresses;
  • Change of employer, address, telephone number, etc.;
  • Reporting a stay abroad.

This document should be returned completed and signed to gestutil@idris.fr.

Closing a computing account

info

A notification by email is sent to the project manager and the user when a computing account is closed.

Case of non-renewal of a project

When an hour allocation is not renewed, the following procedure is applied:

  • at the expiration date of the hour allocation:
    • the unused hours are no longer available. The project's accounts can no longer submit jobs to the computing machine for this project (no more hour accounting for the project);
    • the accounts remain open and attached to the project to allow access to the project's data for 6 months.
  • six months after the expiration date of the hour allocation:
    • the accounts are detached from the project (no more access to the project's data);
    • the data stored in the various project spaces (SCRATCH, STORE, WORK, ALL_CCFRSCRATCH, ALL_CCFRSTORE and ALL_CCFRWORK) will be deleted by IDRIS within an undefined period;
    • accounts still attached to another project remain open but, if the non-renewed project was their default project, they must change it via the idrproj command (otherwise the variables SCRATCH, STORE, WORK, ALL_CCFRSCRATCH, ALL_CCFRSTORE and ALL_CCFRWORK will not be defined);
    • accounts that are no longer attached to any project may then be closed at any time.
warning

Data recovery is the responsibility of each user during the six months following the expiration date of the non-renewed project. This involves transferring the files to a local machine at the user's laboratory or to the disk spaces of another ongoing project on Jean Zay for multi-project accounts.

For Regular Access, these six months of delay allow to avoid unnecessarily closing the accounts of a project at the end of the allocation Ai if the latter has not been renewed for the following year (no hour request for the allocation Ai+2) but has been renewed for the allocation period Ai+3 (i.e. 6 months after Ai+2).

Case of expiration of ministerial authorisation

Ministerial authorisations to access IDRIS resources are only granted/valid for a given period. When your ministerial authorisation reaches its expiration date, we are obliged to close your account.

In this case, the following procedure is applied:

  • sending of a first notification by email 90 days before the expiration date;
  • sending of a second notification by email 70 days before the expiration date;
  • the account is closed on the day of expiration if the authorisation has not been renewed.
important

To avoid this closure, as soon as you receive the first email, the user is invited to make a new account opening request via the eDARI portal so that IDRIS can start processing an extension file. Indeed, the processing of the file may take up to two months.

Closure for security reasons

An account may be closed at any time and without notice at the decision of the IDRIS management.

Case of a detachment request

The project manager can request the detachment of an account attached to their project by completing and sending the signed Account Management Form to gestutil@idris.fr.

During this request, the project leader can request that the data of the detached account and contained in the directories SCRATCH, STORE, WORK, ALL_CCFRSCRATCH, ALL_CCFRSTORE and ALL_CCFRWORK be immediately deleted or copied to the directories of another user attached to the same project.

Following the detachment, if the detached account is no longer attached to any project, it may then be closed at any time.
