Jean Zay: Migration to Red Hat 8.1

On the occasion of the machine maintenance on June 9, 2020, the operating system of the Jean Zay supercomputer will be updated to Red Hat 8.1 (from 7.6 currently). This update will make it possible to dispose of a recent software environment on Jean Zay and to offer new services, over the long term. It is part of the preparation framework for the installation of the Jean Zay extension.

This operating system version change should have a limited impact on your use of the machine. Nevertheless, we recommend that you recompile your codes once the update have been effected, even if the majority of them should continue to function without any action on your part. In case of problems, contact the IDRIS Support.

Warning: following this update, the PGI 19.5, 19.7 and 19.9 compilers will no longer be available on Jean Zay because they are not officially supported on Red Hat 8.1.

Tests

A login node and some compute nodes have already been updated to Red Hat 8.1 and are available for testing. We encourage you to submit some jobs to validate that your codes run properly.

To do this, you must connect to the dedicated login node jean-zay-rh8.idris.fr. You can then submit your jobs as you usually do.

Important :

  • Only a limited number of nodes are available for testing:
    • 88 scalar nodes (cpu_p1 partition)
    • 44 accelerated nodes (default gpu partition).
  • During this transitional phase of testing, an additional manipulation is required to use the PGI 19.10 and 20.1 compilers with Red Hat 8.1:
module use /gpfslocalsup/pub/module-rh8
module load pgi/19.10 # OR pgi/20.1
